Overview: As the senior-most member of the database administration (DBA) team, the Principal Database Administrator is tasked with leading the architecture, management, and optimization of our client’s database infrastructure. This role requires an expert-level skill set in database administration, particularly with Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server platforms, and specialized knowledge of Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) administration and configuration. Operating as an individual contributor, this position involves overseeing complex database initiatives, providing strategic technical direction, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to maintain high levels of availability, security, and compliance across all database environments.
Responsibilities:
Database Architecture & Management
- Serve as the lead technical expert, offering mentorship and guidance to fellow DBA team members.
- Oversee the architecture, administration, monitoring, and performance optimization of Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases.
- Manage complex installations, configurations, upgrades, and patching, which include Oracle RAC clusters and Microsoft SQL Server HA clusters.
- Create and execute advanced high-availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) strategies to align with business needs.
- Design and deploy cloud-based database solutions on platforms such as Azure, AWS, and OCI, ensuring scalability and resilience.
- Perform advanced performance tuning, capacity planning, and growth management with tools like Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) and SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer (DPA).
- Implement automation to streamline regular database operations, including backup/recovery, monitoring, and alert systems.
Application DBA Support
- Oversee Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) configuration, installation, and deployment, ensuring system stability, scalability, and compliance.
- Manage EBS patching, upgrades, and environment cloning to support application functionality.
- Collaborate with application teams to boost EBS performance, troubleshoot issues, and refine database design, queries, and schema.
- Support application deployments and updates, ensuring compliance with separation of duties and integration of database modifications.
- Work alongside application development teams to improve database design, query performance, and schema structure.
Database Security and Compliance
- Collaborate with internal and external audit teams to meet SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) requirements, including control design, documentation, testing, and audit reporting.
- Administer database security, covering user access, encryption, and data masking, to protect sensitive information and uphold regulatory standards.
- Provide SOX-compliant reporting and audit checks as required to fulfill audit obligations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with development, operations, and security teams to align database strategies with business objectives.
- Partner with IT teams to create and implement robust backup, recovery, and archiving plans.
- Ensure that database systems comply with industry-standard security protocols and internal organizational requirements.
Key Qualifications
- Over 10 years of hands-on database administration experience, with expert-level proficiency in Oracle Database technologies (RAC, ASM, Data Guard, OEM) and Microsoft SQL Server (HA, Clustering, SSIS, SSRS).
- Extensive experience with Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS), including installation, configuration, environment cloning, patching, upgrades, and performance tuning.
- Strong understanding of SOX compliance and experience managing audit controls and regulatory requirements.
- Advanced skills in performance tuning, capacity planning, and backup/recovery for demanding environments.
- Proficiency in database security, encryption, and regulatory compliance.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field preferred.
- Availability to participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support as needed.
